To Train This Mind of Ours

Designing our thoughts, words and actions
to create a world we want to live in!

Hands down one of the biggest suspects in the hijacking of our mental health is our very own mind. The most common complaint Dr. Amelia hears in her office is, “I can’t shut my mind off.” The automatic negative thoughts, ANTS, that invade our minds, fuel our emotions, and trigger a whole of array of physiological reactions are as welcome as a colony of ants at a picnic and very common. The Toltec’s describe the mind as a parasite, Buddhist’s, the dualistic ego mind. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a problem, and you are not alone.

Most often we can find that the source of our unhappiness, our despair, our worry and fear is a thought you haven’t questioned. General rule of thumb in Dr. Amelia’s office is don’t trust that mind of ours, let it run amuck, left to its own devices, it can lead you down a very bumpy road, but question it, get it going in the right direction and our thoughts can change our world to a place we want to live in again.

The teaching of The Buddha over 2500 years ago continues to be one of the most relevant and effective interventions in psychology today. Cognitive Therapy (CT) developed by Beck back in the 1960’s is a tool in the traditional therapy hardware store that is a keeper! It is a therapeutic approach that has proven to be one of the most successful in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Understanding that our thoughts generate our emotions, our behavior and effects our physiology is an essential piece in the healing puzzle.

Dr. Amelia has been helping patients to “train this mind of ours” for allmost over 20 years since she ran CBT groups in an inpatient setting, tracking the ANTS and teaching people how to exterminate them. Over the years she has developed many wonderful techniques to work with our negative thoughts and beliefs. She employs the fantastic work of Byron Katie to help question our thinking, and turn our thoughts around or off believing that The Work™, is by far one of the most effective thought (and life) transforming techniques to come forward in many years. Learning to develop an effective meditation or mindfulness practice helps us to gain control of our minds as well.
